Mother’s Day Event: Buy Tickets!

WAND's Mother's Day Fashion Show

After taking last year off WAND is happy to announce our annual Mother’s Day event is back!

“Fashion Resistance To Militarism” is a runway expose' of how militarism has seeped into our homes, our communities and our minds. This unique fashion show features eye-popping, one-of-a-kind designs that challenge some pervasive assumptions about war. The show reveals the high costs of militarism in terms of our lives, our emotional wellbeing, environmental contamination, and war profiteering. "Fashion Resistance..."  uncovers all the ways in which militarism pervades our society and war-making is made to seem normal.

Please join us on Friday, May 6th at 6:30pm at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, MA.

WAND Board Member Susan Cundiff wrote an amazing op-ed on military spending and the fashion show.

"How much belt-tightening can a body take? Even the skinniest fashion models cannot strut their stuff in outfits that endanger their vital organs.

Last week’s House vote to reduce the obese federal deficit is welcome, but the focus on so-called “nonsecurity” spending is totally the wrong way to do it. That portion represents only 12 percent, a small fraction of the budget calories. Many agencies that support large sectors of the U.S. economy, including transportation, housing and agriculture, along with those that serve the most vulnerable people in this country, would have to lay off staff and dramatically cut back their work.

Meanwhile, Pentagon funding, which is already on steroids, remains almost untouched."

Susan's guest column was published in the Eugene Register Guard in Eugene, OR on February 24, 2011.
