Congresswoman Donna Edwards will kick off 2011 conference!
Here at WAND we’ve been working to support women who believe in our mission and goals for thirty years. In 2008 WAND was thrilled to support longtime progressive activist, Donna Edwards, in her run for Congress. Edwards defeated a longtime Democratic incumbent who had voted for the Iraq War.
Edwards’ commitment toward policies that create a more peaceful world put her squarely in line with WAND’s mission. Edwards consistently called for an end to the war in Iraq. She is the co-chair of the Afghan Women’s Task Force, which works to ensure that women’s rights in Afghanistan are not eroded as we begin the troop drawdown. She also serves on the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission.
Congresswoman Donna Edwards already had a long, impressive list of work on progressive causes before she came to Congress. Edwards led the effort, in which many WAND and WiLL members participated, to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 1994. She also served as the executive director of the Arca Foundation and the National Network to End Domestic Violence.
