Special Statement on Iran Nuclear Agreement
WAND Applauds Historic Agreement to Curb Iran’s Nuclear Program
July 14, 2015
Today, Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND) released the following statement regarding the nuclear agreement between the P5+1 (the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China plus Germany) and Iran:
The United States and its five international partners have concluded an historic agreement with Iran that would block Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon, strengthen global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, and minimize the prospects of military conflict between Iran and the United States.
For over 30 years, the United States and Iran have had virtually zero diplomatic relations, tension that will take years to resolve. Yet, if each side holds to the agreement, this two-year diplomatic opening that has culminated in a strong and effective nuclear deal begins to repair the years of damage and will benefit a region beset with violence and extremism.
The nuclear agreement is good not just for American national security but for peace and security globally. It has long been the mission of WAND and of our premier Women Legislators' Lobby (WiLL) program to use peaceful means to solve conflicts. In this way, we agree with President Obama, who stated, "This deal offers an opportunity to move in a new direction. We should seize it. "
Moving forward, Members of Congress will vote on legislation that could make or break an agreement. It is our hope that U.S. Senators and Representatives will judge a deal on its merits and be prepared for the consequences of the very real alternative to a deal: war with Iran.
Fortunately, this agreement is the best path forward to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran and prevent war. And if each side continues to abide by it, the agreement may mark the beginning of a new direction for peace and security.
