WAND Plan of Action:

I. INCREASE EDUCATION AND AWARENESS

  • Educate ourselves by reading, attending programs and lectures, and talking with others about US foreign policy and the history of conflict. Seek a deep understanding of the reasons for this crisis. See these independent news sources to help keep you informed.

  • Learn more about the United Nations, its history, structure, bodies, charters, conventions, declarations, and ways that the UN can be a resource in this crisis. www.un.org and www.un.org/terrorism.

  • Become familiar with pacifism and just war traditions. How can these traditions be a resource now? What does the reality of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons mean for these two traditions?

  • Study the history and effects of US sanctions against countries like Iraq and Cuba. Share this information with others. Resource: www.wilpf.org/

  • Learn more about the importance of protecting civil liberties. www.aclu.org/

  • Educate our communities. Organize forums. Create spaces for dialogue.

  • Always point out and act to correct racial discrimination and racial profiling.

  • Attend or lead a class on nonviolence and nonviolent conflict resolution. Resources include the speeches and writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela.

  • Help initiate a national dialogue about those things that offer genuine security. Start by talking one-on-one with a friend or family member, or gather with a circle of friends for discussion. Contact elected officials with your ideas.
    (See Action Item II.)

  • Explore websites that offer information and analysis. (See links.)
