Women at the Tables of Power
September 29-October 1, 2013
The 2013 WiLL/WAND National Women’s Leadership Conference, “Women at the Tables of Power,” was a huge success! More than 160 women state legislators and community leaders from 35 states, as well as women Parliamentarians from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, and Libya, attended the conference in Washington, DC. The conference began with 2 days of policy briefings and panels featuring experts including noted pollster Celinda Lake, National Education Association Vice President Lily Eskelsen García, and Ambassador Melanne Verveer, as well as Members of Congress including Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) and Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema (AZ-9).
Congresswoman Donna Edwards (MD-4) was honored as our 2013 WiLL/WAND Torchbearer at a reception on Capitol Hill on Monday, September 30. WAND President Emerita Sayre Sheldon was recognized as the Volunteer of the Millennium, and Caitlin Worm and Janice Zagorin were presented with the Janice Kelly Volunteer of the Year Awards. 11 women state legislators – Sen. Sharon Weston Broome (LA), Rep. Vanessa Brown (PA), Rep. Sarah Buxton (VT), Sen. Barbara Favola (VA), Sen. Audrey Gibson (FL), Rep. Jill Krowinski (VT), Rep. Ellen Cogen Lipton (MI), Rep. Rena Moran (MN), Rep. Stacey Newman (MO), Del. Joseline Peña-Melnyk (MD), and Rep. Diane Russell (ME) – were recognized as Pacesetters, women leaders dedicated to sound, progressive policy.
While they were in Washington, WiLL and WAND members reached out to the press to discuss their participation in the WiLL/WAND Conference and to call on Congress to “shut down the shutdown!” On Tuesday, October 1 participants headed to Capitol Hill to deliver their message to Congress in person, just in time for the federal government shutdown.
Thank you to all of the participants, speakers, and sponsors who made this year’s conference our best yet!
