Capital Area WAND meets and plans!
April 2006

Capital Area WAND | Conference Call, 4/17/06

Our next meeting will be on May 22 at 6pm.
Attending: Laura, Tish, Diane, Lane

1. Indigo Girls Concert at Wolf Trap, July 19 at 8pm.
Lane has contacted their management company re; table-ing. Laura will get in touch with her former contacts. This involves a special application since Wolf Trap is a federal park. Today (4/18) I contacted Allison. She is waiting for them to return to Atlanta and will prepare a packet. Table-ing at this venue would seem to work best by being out in front as concert-goers enter and as they exit. We are also trying to find out if they can acknowledge the chapter during the concert.

We need a headcount for attending, since we will purchase tickets as a group. Please let me know if you want to be penciled in as attending. Friends and family are welcome!

2. Common Sense Budget Act – WAND’s tax day mailing connected how our tax dollars and not being spent with common sense.

3. Speaker/Messaging training. – Dianne attended a recent training session on the US and the World Project. We are looking for the opportunity to join other sessions and get as many of our members in as possible. I attended the training last year and can recommend it highly.

4. RecruitmentOur next meeting will be on May 22 at 6pm. This will be a working meeting for preparing postcards for mailing. The location is our home in Alexandria and dinner will be served. This will be a live and a virtual working meeting. If you cannot be there in Alexandria, I’ll mail supplies and you can work from home. We will touch base by phone before and after the meeting. Please let me know your preference, stonlane@aol.com. With $3+/ gallon gas prices, let’s be creative!

5. BIG Event – we are continuing to brainstorm about an event for Mothers Day 2007. Dianne reminded us this day was originally Mother’s Day for Peace. At the retreat in June, I will ask other chapters how their Mother’s Day programs began. We hope to partner with other organizations in our efforts. One idea to consider is an educational piece on the history of the day to be used in schools.

6. We are going into “march” season. We will try to let members know of the area demonstrations as early as possible so we can march together.

7. Announcements:

The Network of Religious Progressives will hold a spiritual activism conference on May 17-20. Go to www.tickkun.org for more information. Some of our members plan to attend, so please let us know if you will be there.

April 25 is Equal Pay Day 2006. This is the day into the next year a woman must work to match a male counterpart’s earnings. A man works five days a week for 12 months, whereas she must work seven days a week for 16 months to earn equivalent wages.

On May 2, 1p-3p, the Casey Foundation will hold a press event at the National Press Club (on 14th St.) on the well being of children in North America. .If you want to attend please let Laura know, lbeavers@aecf.org.

Hope for Peace,
Lane
