WAND Michigan Report: October 2004

List of chapters        Chapter activities     How to start a chapter

Some of the 64 from Michigan who attended OREPA’s “August Action,”

led by Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and organized by Kim Joy Bergier.

Current WAND members: Kim Joy Bergier, Nancy Adadow Gray & Sigrid Dale.

The theme for Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance (OREPA) “August Action for Peace 2004” was “Disarm NOW! NO MORE WMD”. There were around 300 people, from all over the country, who attended the 3 days of events leading up to Sunday afternoon. Around 200 made a 2 mile March through Oak Ridge, Rally then Action at the gates of the Y-12 plant. This huge nuclear weapons production facility is called “Y-12 National Security Complex”. Out of the 12 who were arrested for acts of civil disobedience, 4 were from Michigan. They sacrificed symbols of life to a replica of the bomb before it was knocked down in front of the main gate to Y-12. A “Peace Village” was set up, in an empowering, spiritually motivated stand for life.

Please put Saturday, August 6th, 2005 on your calendar now and consider what part you can play in the creation of an especially large 60th Anniversary commemoration of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There are already plans being made to coordinate as many anti-nuclear groups as possible to truly make an impact in the media, and hopefully in the minds and hearts of those who vote for, fund and build new “usable bunker buster” nuclear weapons.

One of OREPA’s key goals is to stop the production of nuclear weapons at Y-12. Once nuclear weapons production at Y-12 is stopped, we could stop the production of any new U.S. nuclear weapons. Y-12 has specialized equipment to make the core components of every U.S. nuclear weapon, and it stores half of the world’s enriched uranium!
