    MICHIGAN
WAND MICHIGAN Participates in Oak Ridge Rally - August 8-10
Fern Katz and Kim Bergier of WAND Michigan, and 87 other Michigan activists, attended the "Disarmament Begins at Home" rally in Oak Ridge, TN, August 8-10, to protest nuclear weapons production and refurbishing. TN State Rep. Kathryn Bowers, national WAND president, delivered the keynote address, followed by a panel that included Rep. Bowers, Bishop Tom Gumbleton and Fern Katz.

On Saturday (8/9), the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance (OREPA) held an all day workshop on civil disobedience. On Sunday (8/10), 265 people held a rally in a park, then marched to the Y-12 plant. The march took us past signs forbidding swimming or fishing in the creek that runs through Y-12 because of heavy metal contamination. Seven activists volunteered to be arrested for obstructing the entrance to the plant. - Fern Katz, WAND board member

    WAND MICHIGAN -- HIROSHIMA-NAGASAKI MEMORIAL PROCESSION - August 3, 2003

Sunday night, under a slim slice of moon in a Persian blue sky, WAND Michigan and many fellow peace groups joined in a solemn Hiroshima -Nagasaki memorial procession. Slowly, to the beat of funeral drums, we marchers stretched back for two blocks along Main Street in Royal Oak and filed past diners overflowing the many sidewalk cafes on one side and four lanes of Main Street traffic on our other side. Our sign read "Never Again. Abolish Nuclear Weapons."

The memorial program kicked off the upcoming Oak Ridge Action where WAND's own Kathryn Bowers will be keynoter. After the memorial program I made a pitch for the Misleader Campaign, Kim made a pitch for Oak Ridge, and action on the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator; Raging Granny Mokoto Huthwaite, who lived in Tokyo on Aug 6 1945, led us in a song she'd written to the tune of a Japanese children's song. Detroit City Council President Maryann Mahaffey spoke of the parallels between the fear and feverish patriotism that made possible the US internment of Japanese Americans during WWII and which now makes possible the post 9/11 violations of civil liberties including indefinite detentions without charges and deportations based on unproven accusations. One of the most encouraging things to me in the Stop the Bombs video (again played during the program) was the presence of so many YOUNG men and women at the Oak Ridge Action last spring. Keep hope alive. - Clare Mead Rosen, WAND Michigan president

NC HUNGER NETWORK - Season of Hope Conference (9/20)
    Saturday, September 20, 2003
Martin Luther King Jr. Resource Center
    130 East Morgan St., Raleigh
    INFO/Registration

This is the 10th Beyond Charity Conference. The reality is that we know that hunger has a cure! True economic structural change will take place when local communities and individuals (especially the poor) are part of a true democratic process that addresses local, state, national and international issues. You will see and hear oppressed people transformed to activists, the helpless to the powerful, and the hopeless to visionaries. Come hear how they have changed their communities. We will look to the past, but look to the future and conduct important work on this day.

Who should come? We all have a responsibility for creating a better world that is hunger free.

The Minute Women of WAND and the USA Patriot Act

Oregon is on its way to becoming the 4th state to pass a resolution limiting the USA Patriot Act and WAND's Minute Women played a supporting role. The Oregon Senate passed the bill by an 23-2 vote and grassroots efforts are underway to get the measure to the House floor before recess.

The Minute Women have waged three postcard campaigns to support this issue at the city, county and state levels. Tuesday, August 19, two of us gathered nearly 100 postcards for state legislators by wearing our aprons and standing in front of the public library for 2 hours. At times we had 5 people writing at once. Many of them did not know who their state legislator was, so we had maps available to provide that information. Some needed information about the so-called Patriot Act, so we talked with them about loss of civil liberties as a by-product of the war on terrorism.

The following day we took the postcards to Salem and delivered them to the legislative offices. The cover letter accompanying the cards included some of the comments people had written the previous day. One man wrote, "Oregon should officially oppose the Patriot Act. This assault on our cherished civil liberties is perhaps the worst consequence of the terrorist attacks of 2001." A woman wrote, "The constitution has been working for 200 years. Do not allow fear to demolish our freedoms!"

As we walked the halls of the Capitol in our aprons, a man stopped and turned with a look of astonishment. "You're the Minute Women, aren't you? ...from Eugene, right? I heard you were coming." We're beginning to make a name for ourselves and the name is, "those amazing Minute Women from WAND." -- Susan Cundiff, Lane County WAND
