Congress returns from recess
Congress returns on Tuesday (9/2) from its summer recess and must soon complete 13 appropriations bills required for next year's federal budget. The new fiscal year, FY'04, begins on October 1, 2003. Click here for an urgent action related to the Energy & Water Appropriations Bill and nuclear bunker buster funding.
Federal Budget Deficit on the Rise
On August 26, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget office said that the federal budget deficit would be $480 billion next year and could reach a cumulative total of $5.8 trillion by 2013.
In January 2001, when George W. Bush took office, there was a projected 10-year surplus of $5.6 trillion.

- Nuclear Notes
HIGHEST PRIORITY: The Nuclear Bunker Buster
The Energy & Water Appropriations Bill contains $15 million for a nuclear bunker buster, and $6 million for advanced nuclear weapons concepts. A Senate floor vote on this bill will take place soon.
ACTION. Please call your senators and urge them to support amendments to cut funds for new nuclear weapons, including the nuclear bunker buster and "advanced concept initiatives."
