We
will focus on two issues: Working for nuclear disarmament
progress and reprioritizing the federal budget.
Nuclear Disarmament Progress
Last April the President made a commitment
to “set a goal of a world without nuclear
weapons, and pursue it.” Arms control
experts believe that the first six months
of 2010 may be the most important window of
opportunity for nuclear disarmament progress
in 20 years. Congress will play
a key role in shaping U.S. nuclear weapons
policy especially determining budget and spending
for the nuclear weapons stockpile and infrastructure.
The Senate will be considering ratification
of major arms control treaties. For more background
on nuclear disarmament opportunities see:
Can We Clear
the Nuclear Shadow?
Reprioritizing
the Federal Budget
The Administration will present its budget
request for Fiscal Year 2011 (FY 11) to Congress
on February 1, 2010. As Congress considers
the FY 11 Budget, we must ask for a security
strategy that keeps us safer and costs less.
Congress should act to reduce excessive Pentagon
spending to help meet human, environment and
real security needs. Additionally, Congress
should recognize that federal dollars invested
in creating jobs in non-military sectors has
a better return on investment than spending
on defense sector jobs. The Federal Budget
process can be confusing, for help in understanding
it, see All Our Dollars – A Guide
To the Soap Opera Saga of the Federal Budget
Process. We will be updating additional
resources related to the budget and jobs for
you to use in your meetings. |
We hope you will join with us! Organize a meeting with your Senators and Representative while
they are at home. We’ll provide you with plenty
of help to do this! For more information, contact

WAND Public Policy Field Director, and stay tuned
