Physicians for Social Responsibility/Atlanta is concernedfor the health
effects of the MOX project. We consider the project a threat to health and
environment in that there will be:
Unnecessary pollution created in the form of liquidradioactive and other
toxic waste - as in the past, there will beinevitable releases into the
environment
Unnecessary risks in the form of an experimental "burning" of plutonium in
commercial reactors with the, again, unnecessary, reactor embrittlement and
increased negative effects of anyaccidents
Unnecessary transportation of plutonium with itsattendant proliferation and
accident risks
Unnecessary expense to the taxpayer since less costlyand less dangerous
alternatives to MOX exist i.e., Immobilization whichwould be a more complete
solution to plutonium "disposition" since not all "excess" plutonium is
suitable for the MOX process
We call upon the NuclearRegulatory Commission to take seriously its
responsibility to protect thepublic and environment and stop this project in
its tracks NixMOX! "
