Women’s Action for New Directions
Legislative Agenda - 2008

Adopted at February 2, 2008 meeting of WAND, Inc. board of directors

Category A
Most active. WAND takes a lead, lending resources, actively lobbying, leading coalitions, assembling, preparing, and editing materials for distribution.
• Support alternatives to war as a means of resolving differences
• Reduce excessive military spending in order to achieve more balanced spending priorities
• Get US troops out of Iraq and limit US military combat funding; support efforts to limit permanent bases in Iraq
• Prevent new nuclear weapons, including the Reliable Replacement Warhead and the Department of Energy’s proposed Complex Transformation

Category B
Active involvement. WAND assumes an "instrumental" rather than a "leadership" role.
• Engage in dialog with Iran rather than taking military action
• Stop US-India nuclear trade agreement
• Advance programs to prevent nuclear terrorism
• Reduce funding for missile defense
• Prevent space weapons

Category C

Supportive to marginal involvement. WAND would be available to sign on to letters, lend our support occasionally, and/or join with organizational partners.

• Prevent reprocessing of nuclear waste
• Support efforts to store nuclear waste in the least dangerous manner

This represents the WAND legislative agenda for 2008. The alphabetical categories represent the priorities of WAND. The individual items are in no particular nor prescriptive order.
