Women’s
Action for New Directions
Legislative Agenda - 2009
Adopted
at meeting of WAND, Inc. board of directors on February
21, 2009
Category
A
Most active. WAND takes a lead, lending
resources, actively lobbying, leading coalitions,
assembling, preparing, and editing materials for distribution.
Support alternatives to war as a means of resolving
differences.
-
Reduce
excessive military spending in order to achieve
more balanced spending priorities
-
Get
US combat troops out of Iraq
-
Lay
groundwork for U.S. Senate consideration of CTBT
-
Take
steps toward deep cuts in our stockpile of nuclear
weapons –including de-alerting measures and
urging the extension of START I verification provisions
-
Promote
a smaller role for nuclear weapons – especially
discourage any efforts to build a larger nuclear
weapons complex or to pursue development of any
new military capabilities for nuclear weapons
Category
B
Active involvement. WAND assumes
an "instrumental" rather than a "leadership"
role.
Category C
Supportive
to marginal involvement. WAND would be available
to sign on to letters, lend our support occasionally,
and/or join with organizational partners.
This
represents the WAND legislative agenda for 2009. The
alphabetical categories represent the priorities of
WAND. The individual items are in no particular nor
prescriptive order.
