In August

Metro Detroit WAND brought to Michigan Dr. Theodore Postol of MIT and Dr. Nira Schwartz, a former employee of Star Wars contractor TRW who was fired for reporting faulty test results. Nearly 150 people crowded into the Southfield Library to hear these experts. The next day WAND members met with Michigan Senator Carl Levin, ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, to discuss the issue.

North Shore WAND held a vigil and Star Wars forum on the anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki.

Orange County (CA) WAND member Elizabeth Lambe testified at the August 25th Los Angeles Commission on the Sta-tus of Women press conference and public hearing, calling for tax dollars wasted on programs like Star Wars to be redirected to meet human needs in Los Angeles.

In September

Arkansas WAND hosted a luncheon with former U.S. Senator Dale Bumpers to examine the issue of national missile de-fense. Ninety-three people, including Con-gressman Vic Snyder and many students, attended this very successful event, which was covered by a Little Rock television sta-tion. Arkansas WAND members also met with Congressman Snyder, who is on the House Armed Services Committee, to dis-cuss a related issue, the development of “mini-nukes.”

Atlanta WAND sponsored an evening of fun and prizes (and education!) with a raucous game of “Star Wars Jeopardy.” For $100: Building Star Wars will violate what treaty that has served as a cornerstone of arms control for thirty years? Answer: The ABM Treaty.

In October

Lane County (OR) WAND took the Star Wars message to the Eugene community through an October 5 “Women Take Action!” panel and a WAND workshop at the biennial statewide Oregon Women’s Summit.
