WAND Circles

By Bobbie Wrenn Banks

“The Hundredth Monkey” is the story of Imo, a monkey who lived on an island off Japan. Imo would wash her sweet potato in the sea before eating it, a practice observed and soon followed by her friends. One day the number of monkeys who washed their potatoes reached a critical mass and then all monkeys on Imo’s island took up the practice. Even more remarkable, monkeys on other is-lands with no contact to Imo were soon also washing their sweet potatoes.

Jean Shinoda Bolen tells this story in her book, The Millionth Circle, applying the hundredth monkey principle to women’s circles and suggesting that when a critical number of women’s circles form, culture will change.

We in WAND are committed to building and strengthening WAND chapters, believing that WAND circles are contributing significantly to-ward building the critical mass of women’s circles that will indeed bring change. Won’t you join us?
