A retired math teacher, Katz is currently on the national WAND Board of Directors; is a board member of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), greater Detroit; was a UN delegate from the NCJW to the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995.

She received the Heart of Gold Award from the United Way of Southeastern Michigan in 2002, and is a member of the Michigan Public Education Task Force.
