The Need for Re-Education: Incomplete Curriculums and Their Bearing on Domestic Race Relations

By Amanda Furness

In any situation, it is necessary to have a well-rounded knowledge of the history and complete context of something in order to fully understand it. Without a variety of perspectives, there is only one way to interpret something.

It is when we expand our knowledge base to include the perspectives and world view of others that we can begin to both grasp more fully the world that surrounds us and gain insight into our interactions with members of groups outside of our own.

This is especially true when examining the issue of race and the nuances of Black/White race relations.

For 'White' people, otherwise referred to as Caucasians or Euro-Descendants, there exists a tendency to be oblivious to the world around us. Some of this ignorance exists by choice...many whites are afraid to dig within themselves in an effort to discover how they feel about other groups. But overall, we are ignorant not by our own choice but by decree, because the real truth of American history and its impact on race relations has been hidden from us as well as from U.S. society as a whole.

The history that is taught within public schools is misleading and incomplete. From an international standpoint, current world history curriculums in middle and high schools focus on the 'glories' of ancient civilization, but with a decidedly Anglo-Saxon flair. It is rare that American youth are taught about the richness and accomplishments of early African civilizations, and this oversight has meant that many Whites are able to hold on to the stereotypes about Black people that they've been spoon fed from birth.

African-Americans have no history, it would seem, save that which began with the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. To believe this is to believe a lie; it is to offer up an approving nod to the perception of Blacks as inferior, 'uncivilized', inept and irrelevant.

The truth of America's own history - its involvement in the early exploitation of Africa and Africans, its domestic policies in regards to expansionism and 'Manifest Destiny', its brutal and imperialistic attitudes and actions toward Latin American countries - is deliberately absent in current secondary curriculums. Instead of White American youth being able to learn the truth about their own nation - thus giving us insight into why anti-Americanism exists - we are fed consistent helpings of patriotism and nationalism, right on up to the collegiate level.

What happens, though, to those of us who don't make it that far? What if our realities continue to be defined by the propaganda we've ingested?

Poor Whites live in close proximity to and attend school with Blacks in far greater numbers than do upper class whites. Our ignorance about America's past - and the colonialism that predates it - helps to maintain carefully crafted invisible barriers. These divides keep poor Whites from coming together with Blacks and other minorities to demand universal health care, quality education, the dismantling of the prison industrial complex and the honoring of our human and civil rights. With its partial interpretation of history, the United States has succeeded at dividing and conquering those it considers politically irrelevant. In a similar vein, the Federal Government's determined silence on the issues of slavery and reparations remains an obstacle to equality and freedom within this nation. It is hard to peacefully coexist when a complete picture of reality is lacking, and when historical wrongs have been swept under the rug, much less rectified.

Until a change in curriculum is adopted within U.S. schools, race relations between Blacks and Whites will continue to stay the same. The path to healing can only be cleared when the truth is told. Only in affording African history and civilization equal representation in the world history curriculum can Whites in America begin to glimpse a people whose roots do not lie in a legacy of enslavement, but rather in one of organized political systems and thriving community.

Likewise, until a full disclosure of American history and policy is put forth and subjected to mass examination by students and uninformed citizens alike, we are condemned to a life full of half-truths, ignorance and obliviousness. If Americans truly desire a better quality of life and equality for all, then we must have access to history: the full breadth and context of our country's abuse towards and exploitation of others. Only then, armed with accurate information, can we advocate for justice and begin to build authentic, informed relations between Blacks and Whites in this country.
