With the elections behind us, the national debate on the federal budget re-emerged. Critical programs that strengthen families, communities, and our nation face budget cuts. Congress must craft an even-handed budget solution that strengthens our economy and restores hope and opportunity. Can you clearly explain the choices we face? Can you successfully advocate for a budget that serves the best interests of your communities? Where does the public stand on budget issues and how can you reach them effectively?

Our program addressed these questions and included findings from a recent survey on voters’ attitudes toward budget priorities, Pentagon spending, and nuclear weapons.  Participants learned the best messages to use, the messengers that voters trust, and language to avoid.

Celinda Lake is a prominent pollster and political strategist for progressives. She currently serves as President of Lake Research Partners. Lake’s polling and strategic advice has helped numerous candidates win tough races. She has a particular focus on women candidates and women's concerns, having worked for Speaker Pelosi, Governor Janet Napolitano, and Senator Debbie Stabenow. Celinda worked for the largest independent expenditure to take back the House and has been a key player in campaigns launched by progressive groups such as the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, Human Rights Campaign, EMILY'S List and labor unions like AFL-CIO and SEIU. Lake co-authored the book “What Women Really Want” with Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway, which examines the way women are changing the political landscape in America.
