July 2010
WAND PAC works hard to endorse the best possible candidates for Congress. Each candidate that WAND PAC endorses works toward the goals that WAND holds dear: a reduction in violence and militarism and redirection of excessive military resources to unmet human and environmental needs.
After major victories in the 2008 elections - we've already started searching for the best progressive candidates running in races across the country for the 2010 elections. Read below to learn more about our latest endorsements!
We are pleased to endorse the following women candidates:
Joyce Elliott
Joyce is running for retiring Congressman Vic Snyder's seat in Arkansas 2nd Congressional District. Elliott served on the board of the WAND Education Fund and she is a longtime member of the Women Legislators Lobby (WiLL), a program of WAND. As an Arkansas state representative from 2001-2006 and a current state Senator, Elliott has shown herself to be a tireless progressive champion. Once called the "scrappiest of all of Arkansas legislators", Elliott stands up for her district with integrity.
WAND distinguishing points: Joyce states that one of her priorities will be security of our homeland, especially focusing on policy complementary to military force. We need to deliberately concentrate on ramping up our diplomatic corps by recruiting students to consider diplomatic service as well as military service.;

Robin Carnahan
Carnahan is running for retiring Senator Kit Bond's seat in Missouri. She currently serves as Missouri's Secretary of State, where has focused on protecting consumers, cracking down on financial fraud, cutting costs and red-tape for businesses, and ensuring fair elections. She also continues to manage her family's 900 acre farm.
WAND distinguishing points: Carnahan pledges to fight for Missourians, not special interests and says on her questionnaire;"I am strongly in favor of restoring accountability and responsibility to all aspects of the federal budget -- and spending by the Pentagon should be no exception. No-bid contracts and earmarks for defense contractors waste taxpayers money and undermine our national security.

She helped New Hampshire's colleges create a savings program that helps parents save for their children's education and she worked with a coalition of healthcare providers to establish a program that provides medication to seniors and families who cannot afford the prices of their prescription drugs
WAND distinguishing points: Kuster has released several statements about Afghanistan which indicate that although she campaigned for Obama, she will not be afraid to ask questions of him and hold him accountable.

Terri Sewell
Terri Sewell
is a bright, talented, trailblazer running for an open Congressional seat in Alabama’s 7th district. Terri was the first African-American valedictorian of Selma High School. She went on to graduate with honors from Princeton University (one year after First Lady Michelle Obama). She received her Masters degree from Oxford University and her law degree from Harvard University (one year after President Obama). In New York City she worked as a securities lawyer, so she has a deep understanding of the workings of our financial system and how to reform it. Upon returning to Alabama, Terri continued to practice law. One of her focuses is educational finance; she represents many of Alabama’s historically black colleges. The 7th district has some of the poorest counties in the nation, and Terri has pledged to work for economic development and job creation. Terri has been completely engaged in every community she’s been a part of but her roots are in Alabama and she says, “I’ve been inspired by President Obama’s call to action … to become more involved in our communities as well as our country.”
WAND Distinguishing Points: We believe her commitment to improving her community and expanding the opportunities available to its people would make her an ideal member of Congress.
