TAKE ACTION ON WAR AGAINST IRAQ
March 21, 2003

Sample Letter on Use of Nuclear Weapons in Iraq

Model Letter-to-the-Editor

Please rewrite or edit this model letter as you see fit.
The letter and the background information can be quickly transformed into an op-ed.

Dear Editor:

Recent government documents and statements suggest that the Bush Administration is considering using tactical nuclear weapons in the current war against Iraq. Even contemplating the use of nuclear weapons will have dire consequences for international and homeland security.

Threats by U.S. leaders to use nuclear weapons deepen the danger of worldwide nuclear proliferation. Other nations with nuclear capacities will follow the U.S.'s lead, racing to expand their nuclear stockpiles. In a world bristling with nuclear weapons and threats, non-nuclear nations will quickly rush to establish nuclear status. Is this the lesson we want to send to North Korea, India, Pakistan or any potential nuclear power?

The Cold War arms race cost our country billions of dollars and pitted superpower against superpower. The world today is more uncertain and the threats are more numerous. At the same time, our states are in fiscal crisis and our government is cutting critical programs. We simply cannot afford another arms race.

Sincerely,

Your Name
