Thank
you, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney
The women of WAND appreciate Congresswoman Cynthia
McKinney for her outstanding service to our nation
and world. For the past decade, Cynthia McKinney has
been a leader in Congress for environmental protection,
cutting excessive military spending, nuclear arms
control and disarmament, and curbing global arms trade.
Congresswoman McKinney worked tirelessly to write
and pass an arms trade "Code of Conduct." Recently,
with Congressman Jim Leach (R-Iowa), McKinney co-sponsored
crucial legislation, The National Forest Protection
and Restoration Act, to ban logging in our national
forests.
Some will say that Congresswoman McKinney ignored
her constituents. In fact, she understood that the
best way to serve her constituents was to cut the
military budget, to make money available for underfunded
human and environmental needs programs. Some will
say that she should not have questioned the president.
In fact, she understood that there can be no democracy
without questions. Some will say that she was an ineffective
congresswoman. In fact, she contributed significantly
to the work of the House Armed Services Committee
and International Relations Committee. She wrote and
passed legislation. She produced a stellar voting
record. Equally important, Cynthia McKinney exemplified
a strong, courageous woman, who was not afraid to
speak and vote her conscience.
For ten years, the voice of Cynthia McKinney has echoed
across Georgia, Capitol Hill, our nation and world
-- uncompromising and prophetic, borne of a vision
of peace -- precisely what we need now, more than
ever, at this critical time in history. WAND feels
deeply the loss of this voice on Capitol Hill, but
we listen with hope for Cynthia McKinney to speak
again. We know that her work is not yet done. We eagerly
await the opportunity to once again work alongside
this great woman.
