Women's Action for New Directions (WAND)
Proudly Endorses Connie Morella

Women's Action for New Directions is proud to once again endorse Connie Morella for Congress!

WAND has worked since 1982 to empower women to act politically to reduce violence and militarism, and to redirect excessive military resources toward unmet human and environmental needs.

As a former state legislator and the national co-chair of our legislators' network - the Women Legislators' Lobby - Connie has helped us activate women state legislators to address women's health issues, eliminate violence against women, and curb the proliferation of weapons. For her leadership and guidance, we are grateful!

During her past eight terms as a Congresswoman, Connie has been a tried and true supporter of women's rights.

She is a nationally recognized leader in the fight against domestic violence. Her leadership to secure funding for the Violence Against Women Act ensures that battered women's shelters, victims' services, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline are there for the millions of American women who have or will be beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in their lifetimes.

Connie has also been a vocal and diligent supporter of CEDAW, the Convention to End All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. This past June, she testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reminding that body that the United States' lack of action on this treaty is "nothing short of embarrassing." On this issue-as with so many issues of critical importance to women and girls-Connie has reached across the aisle to help form the bi-partisan coalitions that these issues deserve.

Connie Morella is not afraid to take a stand, to choose what is right over what is politically expedient. Perhaps more than any other vote, her courageous and conscientious vote against the Iraq war resolution demonstrates this independence. Connie, we thank you for that vote of conscience!

It is because of her leadership in improving the lives of women - and in speaking up for what is right - that Women's Action for New Directions stands with Connie Morella today!
