Full Moon, New Budget Priorities
Updated: Apr 8
We are in an amazing period of inner clarity thanks to a full moon in Aries during Libra season. Libra season reminds us of the injustice of forsaking ourselves, while an Aries full moon tells us to forge our own path and be independent. This strong combination of two cardinal signs gives us space to think deeply about who we are and what we want to give to the world. Scorpio season and a mercury retrograde are quickly approaching—an intense confluence— so it’s crucial to reach this understanding ASAP before we’re tested with communications mishaps.

This period of clarity comes at a pivotal time in national politics, as our values are vividly on display. Congress is finalizing our federal budget for 2020, and the Democratic Debates show us which policy objectives each candidate would prioritize. Over the past two years, the funding for many crucial departments and agencies has been slashed. Why? To fund the war machine that is our bloated Pentagon. Let’s envision moving away from this war economy we live in and give peace a try. What would you fund to make our country (and the world) a better place?
Check out your sign below to see which underfunded programs you would be the most eager to support based on your sign.
Aries: The first sign of the zodiac is the fire sign Aries! The most optimistic of the zodiac, you are a big dreamer who likes some friendly (and not so friendly) competition and working hard. Sometimes you can be naïve and see things in a very black and white way. Aries is also a cardinal sign, meaning they love action, change, and progress. Pair this with high energy that teeters on combative and you can cultivate an explosive energy that lifts you up or, if unchecked, can tear you and others down. Mix together your big dreams, hard work, do-or-don’t attitude, and love of competition, and what do you get? Let’s go to the moon!! Again!! You’re only going to get there by fully funding NASA! You’re particularly interested in other futuristic programs like the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission, which plans to defend earth from dangerous asteroids by changing their direction.
Taurus: The earthiest of the earth signs! Logic and process are your bread and butter, you love having a solid foundation on which to build. You also are a fixed sign, meaning that you are steadfast, stubborn, and do not adapt well to change. However, you like being reliable, stable, and secure. If you’re pushed too much your anger can be SCARY— you are not represented by the Bull for nothing! America's crumbling bridges and pothole-filled roads just don’t cut it for you. Your road rage at having to change ANOTHER tire on the side of the highway has got you thinking that you need to get to the bottom of this issue. Between your love for stability and a solid foundation, you would increase funding for The Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration.
Gemini: The twins love to be sociable, expressive, and artistic. You can create drama out of nothing and adapt on the spot. You ultimately are the most adept at communication and exchanging ideas. But, you can come off as two-faced because you know how to convey different messages to different people. It makes sense that, as a mutable sign, you are great at adapting and changing, but not so great at follow-through and stability. How about channeling all that energy into funding the National Endowment for the Arts? Trump (who is, ironically, also a Gemini) has threatened to eliminate the NEA for the past three years, but it’s hanging on with important programs like Poetry Out Loud and art therapy classes for veterans.
Cancer: The crab. When you hear Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Ray, you're feeling the Cancer szn vibes. Nurturing and emotional, but with a hard defensive shell, you can retreat back into yourself when you get hurt or feel vulnerable. Crabs are water signs, but they also bring in the start of summer and the longest day of the year. When you mix water and fire, you can get a thunderstorm—chaotic and scary. Or, you can get steam— which started the whole Industrial Revolution and helped bring new and improved ways of living to everyone. It’s all about keeping your emotional ways balanced and knowing when you need to retreat into your shell. Let's make sure that you don't become overwhelmed by fully funding research and access to mental health facilities for all people, including Mental Health Block Grants, National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Leo: Obama was a Leo, need I say anymore? If they shine they want to make sure everyone else is shining too! While they might get a bad rap for their egos, ultimately, they’re the most generous of the zodiac (I have no bias at all…). Leos are natural leaders, that's why you are SO MAD that the USA is so far behind on federally-mandated paid family leave! Only three countries do not mandate paid time off for new parents: Papua New Guinea, Lesotho, and the United States! Leos are mad as hell that we aren’t leading when it comes to caring for our own, so let’s fund the Department of Labor to get 12 weeks of PAID family leave to catch up with the rest of the world!
Virgo: Organized, effective, hardworking, and practical. You can also come across as shy due to your love of reading, writing, and generally being in your head. You have big dreams, with a detailed step-by-step way to get there. You’re not the type to fly off the handle or, my god, cry in public. You want everyone to be able to see things the way you do in a clear and level-headed way. That’s why you want a well-funded public education system that bolsters myriad talents and interests, is clean and healthy, and has up-to-date books on books on books. You would invest in the future of America by ending the massive cuts to the Department of Education.
Libra: The only zodiac not represented by an animal is Libra, the scales. Libras are all about creating harmony, balance, and avoiding conflict. They want to make sure everyone's voice is heard and respected. The only time you might be goaded into conflict is if you feel like there has been a huge injustice, but you would still much rather debate the systems that caused the injustice rather than point your finger at a specific person. Given your peace-loving nature and passion for justice, you would prioritize our critically underfunded Department of State to ensure that diplomats diffuse any tension with foreign nations before it grows into a military conflict.
Scorpio: Focused and perceptive— Scorpios are cunning and able to capture their prey between their claws with finesse and strength. You’ve probably been called Type-A more than once in your life, and you’ve loved it every time. You are constantly striving for something, and are willing to do anything to get there. You’re resourceful like the scorpion you are named after; you can survive in every climate, from the desert’s extreme heat to freezing temperatures. A resourceful and goal-oriented person like yourself would fund the Treasury Department’s Internal Revenue Service, otherwise known as the IRS. The IRS has had a decade of cutbacks, which means long waiting times for questions about your taxes and lack of capacity to go after major bad actors who have massive, complicated, tax cases. Do you wonder why Trump wouldn't want to fund a department that reins in tax noncompliance? A Scorpio would find out.
Sagittarius: Sagittarius cannot sit still—you must always be out and about getting that cool Insta pic that will get hundreds of likes. Represented by the Archer, a half man half horse with a bow and arrow, you’re always aiming for a new adventure in order to gain experience and wisdom that you can share with others. You’re a mutable sign, which means you are flexible and always ready for a change. You’re the type to just go to the airport and take the first flight to a place you’ve never been and see how it goes. That’s why you would prioritize funding the National Park Service, with 58 National Parks and hundreds of miles to explore, you have plenty of space to go crazy and get all the great shots.
Capricorn: Think of a goat skillfully climbing up an almost vertical mountain and you’ll see Capricorn’s energy. You are responsible, independent, and able to learn from your mistakes. Most people will say that you have a spine of steel and a great strength in character. You’re measured in the decisions you make for yourself and others. Don’t mistake this for being timid, you’re ambitious as hell— the goat doesn’t take its time climbing the highest mountain for nothing. However, they can have a difficult time being flexible and open to new ideas and might need a friend to pull them by the arm to hit the dance floor. This is why you would fund the Department of Justice, the law is the law, and any change that happens you want it to be measured and well thought out. You eschew partisan politics and just want to see justice served.
Aquarius: Aquarius hate feeling constrained and will FIGHT YOU if you try to mess with their vision. Visualized as the “water bearer” they are known as the humanitarian of the zodiac, giving life-sustaining water to those who need it. This also represents your drive to share and gather knowledge and information. You need constant mental stimulation or else you’ll get bored and look for something to fix or someone to help. Water also sustains growth and you are all about growing grand visions for yourself and for the world around you. That’s why you’re not afraid to tackle our healthcare system and expand Medicare and Medicaid by increasing funding for the Department of Health & Human Services.
Pisces: Pisces, the fish, is all about doing the right thing because it feels like the right thing to do. Your empathy is unmatched and you always come to every situation with an open mind and the ability to understand even the most complex and fragile situations. Some signs prefer to get things done through aggressiveness and bluster, while you would prefer to get in touch with the emotional side of an issue. On the flip side, you are easily hurt by criticism and can feel overwhelmed by human suffering. You are appalled that some people in our country go to bed hungry at night and feel particularly hurt by the recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that helped 40 million people last year have access to a nutritional diet (like fish!). Right now the program is under attack from new regulations that would leave 3 million people with lack of access to SNAP. You would fully fund and broaden this life-saving program housed in the Department of Agriculture.
