Take Action to Support Common Sense Gun Laws: How to Call your Senators
If you’re like us, you are feeling overwhelmed, devastated, and fearful, and you’re looking for a way to channel your feelings into action. We are standing with gun violence prevention organizations and demanding that the Senate pass H.R. 8, a bill that will close loopholes in background check policies. The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021 was passed in the House last year, and the Senate has refused to act.
Tell you Senators to take action now.
Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. An operator will ask which office you would like to connect to. Tell them the name of one of your Senators. Click here if you aren’t sure who your Senators are!
You will either be directed to a voicemail or to an intern/staff member in your Senator’s office. You can use the following script, if useful, but also feel free to speak from the heart about why this issue matters to you.
“Hello, my name is ______, and I am a constituent from (Town, State). The devastating violence in Texas, alongside several other mass shootings across the country, demand immediate Congressional action. I urge you to support H.R. 8, which will close loopholes in background checks and make gun ownership safer. Thank you for your time.”
If you are speaking with a staffer, they may ask for your contact information in order to follow up with you. You can choose to share this with them, or you can just say “No thank you, I don’t need a written response, but please pass this message along to the Senator.”
Then, call the Capitol Switchboard again, connect with your other Senator’s office and do it all again. All in all, these calls should take less than 10 minutes.
