STATEMENT: WAND Stands with Ukraine and Condemns Russian Invasion

Washington, D.C. — In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Executive Director of Women's Action for New Directions, Nancy Parrish, released the following statement:

"We condemn, in the strongest terms, Russia’s violent and unprovoked attacks on cities across Ukraine. We grieve with the people of Ukraine and sympathize with the pain, anxiety, and uncertainty that they face. As a sovereign nation, Ukrainians—and Ukrainians alone—deserve to decide on the political future of their country.

"We are deeply concerned about Russia’s thinly veiled threats of nuclear retaliation toward those who aid Ukraine. Now is the time to work to reduce, not accentuate, the risk of nuclear escalation, for the sake of Ukrainians—and for all of us.

"We firmly support immediate non-military actions, including sharp multilateral sanctions, to increase the financial and political cost of war to Russia and open space for peace negotiations."
