How to Avoid a Nuclear Apocalypse
On International Women's Day, March 8th, 2019, Women's Action for New Directions hosted a panel at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival and social impact conference. The panelists discussed the historical implications of nuclear weapons manufacturing and testing and the future of nuclear weapons policy given the changing landscape of arms control and international cooperation.

Beatrice Fihn
As the Executive Director of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Fihn manages the coalition of more than 468 NGOs working together to achieve a treaty banning nuclear weapons. ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its work.
Dr. Mareena Robinson Snowden
Dr. Robinson Snowden is the first American-born woman of color to earn a Ph.D. from the MIT Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering. Her research focused on developing verification technologies beyond those currently used in bilateral disarmament agreements.
Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins
Jenkins is the Founder and President of Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS). As an ambassador at the U.S. Department of State from 2009-17, she served as the coordinator for threat reduction programs in the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation.
Deepika Choudhary
Choudhary is the Managing Director of the Peace and Security Collaborative at ReThink Media. In this role, she joins a powerhouse team of ReThink professionals advocating for a more constructive, sane, and just US foreign and national security policy.
