UNITED AGAINST NUCLEAR WAR

No Checks

In coalition with Beyond the Bomb, Win Without War, Peace Action, ReThink Media, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Union of Concerned Scientists, and others, Women’s Action for New Directions is leading a grassroots campaign to stop nuclear war. Through our United Against Nuclear War campaign, women members of city and state governments, as well as ordinary Americans from around the country, have taken the lead on protecting their communities from reckless threats of nuclear war.

The founders of the United States created a system of checks and balances, and it is essential for that standard to be applied to the potentially civilization-ending threat of nuclear war. Congress must act to preserve global stability by realigning our nation’s nuclear weapons launch policy with the Constitution and restricting the circumstances under which the U.S. would be the first nation to use a nuclear weapon.

At the state level, legislators have responded to constituent concerns by introducing resolutions in 13 states calling for checks and balances on the President’s power to start a nuclear war. Since 2018 four states have passed legislation: California, New Jersey, Illinois, and Oregon. Activists are working with city councils and mayors to pass similar city resolutions.
